SLEEP HYGIENE

Recent clinical studies consistently highlight the crucial role of good sleep in maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In fact, among all the self-care practices, prioritizing good sleep is arguably the most vital. Below are some simple yet profound recommendations to help improve your sleep quality:

  • Get outdoor light throughout the day. Begin with 5–10 minutes soon after waking, while the sun is still low on the horizon. Step outside again in the late afternoon and around sunset. Allow more time in dim or overcast conditions. Look toward the sky and your surroundings, never directly at the sun.

  • Avoid bright lights and device screens for two hours before bedtime. This includes all bright light, not just blue light. Dim your home’s lighting and use low-positioned lamps instead of bright overhead fixtures.

  • Make your bedroom as dark as possible. Use an eye mask if you cannot adequately darken the room.

  • Keep your bedroom quiet. Use earplugs if needed.

  • Keep your bedroom comfortably cool. Around 63°F can be a starting point; adjust the temperature and bedding so you remain comfortable.

  • Place a folded blanket beneath your feet for comfort.

  • Stop consuming caffeine at least eight hours before bedtime. Move the cutoff earlier if you are particularly sensitive to its effects.

  • Choose calming reading before bed. Favor fiction or other light reading that does not leave you mentally stimulated.

  • Listen to a binaural beat meditation or hypnosis recording as you settle into bed. Use it to quiet your attention and prepare for rest. Our meditation recordings are available on the Daily Practice page.
